What PD is and why glasses need it
Pupillary distance is the distance between the centers of your pupils, in millimeters. Lenses have an optical center — the sweet spot you're meant to look through — and your PD tells the lab where to place it for each eye. When it's right, you look through the optically cleanest part of the lens all day without thinking about it. When it's off, your eyes work through the lens's periphery: strain, headaches, and edges that never quite feel sharp, especially with stronger prescriptions.
Shops measure PD in person. When you buy glasses online, you supply it yourself — which is why a two-minute measurement is the single most useful preparation for ordering prescription glasses on the internet.

Use the table only to catch mistakes: if you measure 38 mm or 82 mm, re-measure. Never substitute the average for your own number.
Method 1: mirror and ruler (solo, 2 minutes)
- Stand about 20 cm from a mirror, millimeter ruler in hand.
- Hold the ruler flat against your brow line, markings facing the mirror.
- Close your right eye. With your left eye open, align the ruler's 0 with the center of your left pupil.
- Without moving the ruler, switch eyes — close the left, open the right — and read the millimeter mark at the center of your right pupil.
- Repeat three times and take the most common result.
The eye-switching trick cancels the parallax error that makes naive mirror measurements unreliable. Expect your three readings to agree within a millimeter.
Method 2: a friend and a ruler (easiest)
- Sit facing your helper, both heads at the same height, about arm's length apart.
- Look past their head at a fixed point 3+ meters away — focusing on something distant keeps your eyes parallel, which is what the measurement assumes. Don't look at the ruler or at them.
- They rest the ruler across the bridge of your nose and read the distance between pupil centers, keeping their own head centered to avoid reading at an angle.
- Two or three passes; keep the consistent number.
Method 3: camera-based measurement
Face-tracking software can locate your pupils from a camera image and calculate the distance between them, using an object of known size (commonly a bank card held to your forehead) as the scale reference. Done well, it's as accurate as a careful ruler measurement and considerably easier — there's nothing to align and no parallax to manage. Single vs. dual PD (when one number isn't enough)
A single PD (e.g. 63) measures pupil to pupil. A dual PD (e.g. 31.5/31.5) measures each pupil to the bridge of the nose separately — because most faces aren't perfectly symmetric. For single-vision glasses a good single PD is usually sufficient; progressive and high-prescription lenses benefit from dual measurement, and near-vision (reading) PD runs about 3 mm narrower than distance PD since your eyes converge up close. Is the PD on my prescription?
Often not — many prescriptions omit it, because PD is traditionally measured by whoever dispenses the glasses, not the examiner. You're entitled to ask your optometrist to measure and note it.
